Method Two: Play Spotify Music in the Car via Bluetooth. Some car stereos have built-in Bluetooth functionality. Spotify is very well compatible with most Bluetooth car radios. To listen to Spotify in the car via Bluetooth, you’ll need to pair your smartphone, tablet, or computer that has Spotify on it with the car stereo, which is the same. Almost every time Spotify has an update, it messes with my cars Bluetooth too. I usually have to delete the re-add my phone to the Bluetooth directory in my car, and I have to make sure the Spotify app is open on my phone, not just running in the background. Whenever I get in the car my Iphone connects to my bluetooth, unfortunately the media that plays is always from the default media player which I don't use and the only way to change it so it plays spotify is to take my phone out of my pocket, unlock it and open the spotify app.

Available on select cars, CarPlay is a smarter, safer way to use your iPhone in the car. CarPlay takes the things you want to do with your iPhone while driving and puts them right on your car’s built-in display.

First, make sure that your country or region supports CarPlay and that your car supports CarPlay.

If your car supports CarPlay using the USB port, plug your iPhone into the USB port of your car or stereo. The USB port might be labelled with a CarPlay icon or a smartphone icon.

If your car supports wireless CarPlay, press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel to set up CarPlay. Or make sure that your car is in wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode. Then on your iPhone, go to Settings > General > CarPlay > Available Cars and choose your car. Check the manual that came with your car for more information.

Connect using Bluetooth

Spotify
  1. Restart your device.
  2. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth. Wait for about 5 seconds, then turn Bluetooth back on.
  3. Check the manual that came with your car for more information on how to pair with a Bluetooth device. Most cars require a phone setup on the car display.
  4. If you've connected multiple phones to your car stereo, try renaming your device: Go to Settings > General > About > Name and type a new name. Then try connecting again.
  5. Update your device.
  6. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.

If you still can't connect, contact Apple Support.

Connect using USB playback

  1. Restart your device and your car.
  2. Make sure that your device is unlocked and on the Home screen.
  3. If possible, try to connect using another cable or USB port. Check the manual that came with your car to learn how to connect an Apple device.
  4. Check your charging port for any debris or damage. Make sure that your charging cable is properly inserted into the port.
  5. Update your device.
  6. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.
  7. Try playing audio from a different app. If you can't play audio from a third-party app, contact the app developer for help. If you can't play audio from an Apple app, contact Apple Support.

NEVER attempt any of these connectivity methods while you are driving, and avoid interacting with your device while your car is in motion.

If your car has an AUX or USB socket, using a cable is probably one of the fastest ways to connect.

  1. Make sure you have the correct type of cable to connect to your phone (you can check with your car’s manufacturer if you don’t know which type you need). Some phones no longer have a phone jack, so you may also need the dongle that came with your phone.
  2. Find the AUX or USB socket in your car and plug in the cable. (Try looking for it on the center console.)
  3. Turn on your car and stereo, select the AUX input, then open Spotify and tap play.

Use Bluetooth to go wireless and enjoy all the functionalities of your smartphone or tablet.

  1. While you’re in park, go to “Settings” in your car stereo or to find the Bluetooth menu, then choose the option to pair your device. Some cars have a voice control button on the steering wheel instead—press that.
  2. Sync by turning on Bluetooth on both your mobile device and your stereo.
  3. Select your car, enter the pairing code if needed, then open up Spotify and hit play.
  4. You’ll see larger, driver-friendly icons in the Now Playing view on your phone, and you’ll also be able to quickly change songs with the Choose Music icon at the bottom of the screen.
  5. If you have audio controls on your steering wheel, you may now be able to control what you’re listening to from there.

Have Android Auto or CarPlay? Lucky you—your car is already Spotify integrated!

  1. For Android Auto, start your car, plug your phone into the USB port, and play Spotify.
  2. For CarPlay for iOS, start your car and make sure Siri is on. Plug your phone into the USB port or connect wirelessly. Then, on your iPhone, go to “Settings,” then “General,” then “CarPlay.” Select your car and get listening!
  3. Check out Spotify Everywhere to see if your car offers the Spotify app built into the dashboard. Just to note, some cars require Spotify Premium for integrated listening.
